Desyrel Drug Info

Desyrel Drug Uses: Trazodone (trade names Desyrel, Molipaxin, Trittico, Thombran, Trialodine) is a psychoactive compound with sedative, anxiolytic, and antidepressant properties. The various manufacturers claim that the antidepressant activity becomes active in the first week of therapy. Trazodone has less prominent anticholinergic (dry mouth, constipation, tachycardia) and adrenolytic (hypotension, male sexual problems) side effects than most tricyclic antidepressants.

How to Use Desyrel : Take trazodone exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain the instructions to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take trazodone with a meal or a light snack. Food increases the amount of medicine that is absorbed by the body and it may help to decrease dizziness. It is important to take trazodone regularly to get the most benefit. Do not stop taking trazodone without first talking to your doctor, even if you begin to feel better. It may be several weeks before your symptoms begin to improve, and you may require continuous treatment for quite some time.

Desyrel Precautions: Trazodone is metabolised by CYP3A4, a liver enzyme. Inhibition of this enzyme by various other substances may delay its degradation, leading to high blood levels of trazodone. CYP3A4 may be inhibited by many other medications, herbs, and foods, and as such, trazodone may interact with these substances. One drug-food interaction is grapefruit juice. Drinking grapefruit juice is discouraged in patients taking trazodone. One glass of grapefruit juice occasionally is not likely to have this effect on most people, but drinking large amounts, or drinking it regularly is proven to affect trazodone's clearance. The possibility of suicide in depressed patients remains during treatment and until significant remission occurs. Therefore, the number of tablets prescribed at any one time should take into account this possibility, and patients with suicidal ideation should never have access to large quantities of trazodone. Episodes of complex partial seizures have been reported in a small number of patients. The majority of these patients were already receiving anticonvulsant therapy for a previously diagnosed seizure disorder. While trazodone is not a true member of the SSRI class of antidepressants, it does still share many properties of the SSRIs, especially the possibility of discontinuation syndrome if the medication is stopped too quickly. Care must therefore be taken when coming off the medication, usually by a gradual process of tapering down the dose over a period of time.

Desyrel Drug Interactions: Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. This drug should not be used with the following medication because very serious interactions may occur: sibutramine. If you are currently using the medication listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting trazodone. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: other antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, bupropion, fluoxetine, nefazodone, venlafaxine), digoxin, drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove trazodone from your body (such as azole antifungals including ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitor drugs including atazanavir/indinavir/ritonavir, macrolide antibiotics including erythromycin, cimetidine, rifamycins including rifampin, St. John's wort, certain anti-seizure medications including carbamazepine), other drugs that can cause bleeding/bruising (e.g., anticoagulants such as heparin or warfarin, antiplatelet drugs including NSAIDs such as ibuprofen), drugs for high blood pressure, ginkgo, MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine).

Desyrel Possible Side Effects: Because the frequency of adverse drug effects is affected by diverse factors (e.g., drug dose, method of detection, physician judgment, disease under treatment, etc.) a single meaningful estimate of adverse event incidence is difficult to obtain. This problem is illustrated by the variation in adverse event incidence observed and reported from the inpatients and outpatients treated with DESYREL. It is impossible to determine precisely what accounts for the differences observed.

Desyrel Overdose: Seek emergency medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of Desyrel overdose include: vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, stomach pain.

Desyrel Storage: Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Desyrel Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
